Blog 1, Mood Management Theory

I will discuss a topic that reflects on my life on a daily basis, Mood Management Theory. It is a theory where people are select media to change or keep their mood, as they depend on it. People manage to us media everywhere such as, we see it on televisions, new papers, articles, music, and social media. It’s what we read, listen, or learn about what the media is sharing, as it changes our moods and would lead to actions or behaviors. I sometimes like to change my mood when I’m stress or sad and watch positive videos to make me feel better. At times, I will click on videos that make me upset such as corruption and animal torture. One of the examples of media that not only affected my behavior and mood but the people around me finding out the death of Kobe Bryant. Before the news broke, It was January 26, 2020. I was working on Sunday morning and was helping costumers as I was in a good mood. A good mood because it started a nice day and learning that Lebron James passed Kobe Bryant’s all-time scoring points leader. I’m not sure why but I was already thinking about Kobe Bryant before the accident because I usually shout “Kobe” at work when I throw trash left by costumers in the trash bin. Later that day, one of my co-workers just told me that Kobe died and everyone is tweeting about it. At first, my heart sank and I felt nervous. I went to the bathroom to check if the news really is real because my co-worker mentions the source is from TMZ. Not really a reliable source to me so I had to check another source if it real, as New York Post also confirmed that Kobe Bryant did die in a helicopter accident with his daughter as passengers. I really was depressed, I didn’t even work the same that I was before. I worked slow and kept thinking about Kobe last game I saw and remembering him from Finals I watched him play with my father. My managers around me and co-workers were just sad hearing from social media the news that broke. I felt like I wasn’t in reality, as the whole day I felt sad. The news broke out everywhere and kept reminding me of Kobe Bryant’s death such as everyone posting pictures of him on social media, the Grammy memorial, people messaging me about it, and television reporting about it. I tried to change my mood by going on youtube and watch positive videos however, even there were videos of Kobe on my feed. My mood change from that morning, to become sad after going on social media finding out about this. I guess this not only affected me, but people around me were also affected by this as I see athletes, friends, and people were crying about this. Mood management theory is real, if we didn’t know Kobe Bryant’s death from the media, we wouldn’t be this affected about it.
